2023 is behind us, and as we step into the new year, we’re faced with a fresh set of opportunities. The past year, dominated by a bear market, was a real test for the web3 ecosystem. We witnessed many projects struggling to stay afloat, while others not only survived but thrived by adding real value to the ecosystem. As we look ahead to 2024, it’s clear that the experiences of the past year have set the stage for new trends that are about to unfold. In this article, we’ll explore five key web3 trends that every product manager in the ecosystem should be aware of.

The year of identity

Identity - Dall.e

Identity – Dall·e

2024 is poised to be a crucial year for digital identity. For product managers working on services or applications that require authentication, focusing on decentralized identity management will be essential. This approach puts users in control of their data, allowing them to share only what is necessary for an application’s functionality. We can also expect a rise in the use of verifiable credentials, with Zero Knowledge proofs (ZK proofs) enabling the sharing of proof without revealing the underlying data.

The benefits of decentralized identities and verifiable credentials are significant for both end-users and organizations.

  • End-users gain ownership and control over their digital identities, enhancing their privacy.
  • For organizations, these technologies enable quick verification of information, fraud prevention, increased data security, and reduced risk of cyber attacks, as sensitive data is not stored in their systems

This web3 trend extends beyond the domain of web3 developers and organizations. Public sector advancements are also evident:

In Switzerland, Partisia Blockchain and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO Valais-Wallis) are collaborating on a decentralized electronic identity system, focusing on privacy and individual data control. Meanwhile, China is advancing its blockchain ambitions with the RealDID initiative, aiming to create a national-level real-name decentralized identity system. These developments reflect a global move towards more secure and user-controlled digital identities
If you are an Spanish speaker, i strongly recommend you this podcast from our Mighty Block series: “Descentralizando la identidad con web3

Regulatory Compliance and Governance

Regulations – Dall·e

Regulatory aspects, especially concerning the SEC and ETFs, are becoming increasingly important in the web3 space. As the industry matures, adherence to regulatory norms and governance standards is crucial for ensuring sustainable growth and user trust. Many countries already have some regulations or guidelines for Crypto space.

Recent regulatory developments underscore this trends:

  • The European Union’s Market in Crypto Assets (MiCA) Regulation entered into force in June, with a final consultation on Europe-wide regulations to be published early in 2024, and member state mandates taking effect in 2025.(1)
  • Hong Kong released new guidelines for virtual asset trading platform operators in June 2023.(1)
  • Namibia passed its Virtual Assets Act in last July, with regulations pending.(1)
  • Last September, the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) released proposed updates to its framework for token trading businesses to trade tokens and a changed framework for how it would put tokens on its “greenlist” (1)
  • Also in September 2023, Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority released regulations on virtual asset activity.(1)

For product managers in the web3 ecosystem, staying informed and compliant with these evolving policies and regulations is a must. It’s not just about creating secure experiences; it’s also about safeguarding our end-users from potential risks and ensuring our services align with this new regulatory landscape.

NFTs reloaded

Bored Ape Reload for 2024 - Dall·e

Bored Ape Reload for 2024 – Dall·e

The NFT landscape in 2023 saw a slowdown, with collections like Bored Ape Yacht Club and Azuki Elementals experiencing significant drops in value. Marketplaces such as OpenSea and Blur responded to this bear market by reducing to try to maintain the interest on people and capture market share

In 2024 the expectation looks more promising, expanding NFT scope beyond just art. A key area of growth is in gaming, which, despite being in the early stages of web3 development, is increasingly integrating NFTs. These digital tokens are an essential part of gaming, providing players ownership of in-game assets, which can then be collected or traded in secondary markets.

As for projections, Blockworks suggests significant growth in the web3 gaming sector,

  • At least 2x growth in Web3 games overall (according to Jon Jordan’s Big Blockchain Games List, there are currently 1,037) as of Dec. 19, 2023. (2)
  • At least 3x growth in fully on-chain games (according to Jon Jordan’s Big Blockchain Games List, there are currently 54) as of Dec. 19, 2023. (2)

Even if this is not as evolved as gaming, other usage is traceability of physical assets. The transparent blockchain ledger effectively tracks the ownership history of an NFT, bolstering authenticity and provenance.

Consequently, NFTs stand poised to revolutionize the realm of real-world asset ownership and management. In the future, utilizing NFTs could span a wide spectrum of assets, such as art, collectibles, real estate, and even securities.

Web3 onboarding using web2 scalable solutions

Onboarding from web2 to web3 - Dall·e

Onboarding from web2 to web3 – Dall·e

To truly mainstream web3 and welcome the next billion users, it’s crucial we shift our focus towards a wider audience. Sure, in the web3 space, we’re all about privacy and security – the whole ‘not your keys, not your assets’ mindset. But let’s be real: this appeals more to the early birds and tech enthusiasts who are willing to dive deep.

To grow our ecosystem and make it robust, our game plan should include attracting people, guiding them step-by-step, and gradually unveiling the myriad possibilities of web3.

This year is going to be all about seamless onboarding. As product managers, we need to analyze the onboarding process. How can we borrow and adapt what worked in web2 to make web3’s decentralization more gradual and user-friendly? Our goal here is to ensure our users feel at ease and build confidence in navigating through this new tech landscape.

Blockchain meets AI?

The Blockchain meets the AI - Dall·e

The Blockchain meets the AI – Dall·e

2023 was, without doubt, the year of AI. When this phenomenon appeared in our lives, we started to think about how to collaborate with the decentralized ecosystem. Is blockchain and AI something that naturally is going to work together? According to Vitalik, in the Podcast La Ultima Frontera, “…A lot of people want to be a connection and it’s sometimes hard to find a really big and deep one. There are definitely some smaller ones, for example ZKML (Zero Knowledge Machine Learning)”

Does this mean that as Product Manager we don’t need to worry about this? Well, actually the IA is an incredible tool to help us to improve our products, accelerating the research, helping to brainstorm, or as a simple assistant in our daily operative tasks. So even if there is not an immediate correlation between web3 and AI, is definitely one between what we can achieve using this tool to enhance the ecosystem with our products.

Web3 trends Takeaways

In summary, 2024 for web3 Product Managers is about embracing innovation responsibly, focusing on user empowerment, navigating the evolving regulatory environment, broadening the utility of NFTs, simplifying onboarding, and exploring the synergies between AI and blockchain; to create a safer, more inclusive, and vibrant web3 ecosystem.

As blockchain technology continues to evolve, new concepts and innovations are emerging to revolutionize the world of cryptocurrency.

One of these new concepts are the soulbound tokens ( SBT token), which have the potential to improve use cases of digital assets.

In this article, we will explore what soulbound tokens are, how they work, and different soulbound token implementations.

What are Soulbound Tokens?

Soulbound tokens are a special kind of digital asset linked to a user or wallet and cannot be moved or exchanged. They are unique non-fungible tokens (NFTs) created on a blockchain network and permanently associated with the user that mints this token.

SBT vs NFT
SBT vs NFT –  https://tokensgratis.com/que-son-los-soulbound-tokens-sbt-y-ntst/

You can resold NFTs in secondary markets or transfer them between addresses while these type of tokens will stay in the minted address.

Because of that, soulbound tokens nft are highly secure and immutable.

So, soulbound token meaning refers to something that is permanently connected or linked to a character or account, often in a way that cannot be undone.

How do Soulbound Tokens Work?

You create Soulbound tokens on a blockchain network using smart contracts. These soulbound token contracts contain the logic that determines the ownership and usage rights of the soulbound token.

Once the soulbound token is created, it is linked to a specific user or account and will belong to that user forever.

Soulbound Tokens Use Cases

SBTs are non transferable and have a wide range of potential use cases due to their unique properties.

Lets see some real examples of their uses:

Gaming

You can find SBT soulbound tokens in the gaming industry as in-game assets or to represent the actual player’s gaming identity.

We are in an early stage but there are platforms developing this concept of gamers identity such as Dequest or Soulbound.

This kind of platform provides you two major benefits.

  • In one hand, it awards you NFTs and levels up your soulbound token while you complete quests in different games.
  • On the other hand, it lets you build a reputation as a gamer across different games.

  • Digital Identity Token: They are a form of digital identity too, where each user has a unique token that represents their identity on a blockchain network. This can help prevent identity theft and fraud by providing a secure and verifiable way to prove ownership of digital assets. Binance use this concept for users who finished their KYC process:

There are plenty of more use cases that are still under development, for example:

sbt cases of use

For example; imagine a University degree. A university could provide a graduate with their certificate as an SBT. Currently, if a university was to give out a degree as a standard NFT, the graduate would theoretically be able to sell it due to the nature of the technology. On the other hand, if it was a Soulbound token, they would be unable to sell it or transfer it. This characteristic is specially valuable for an educational institution.

Another great example is using SBTs as event tickets. Event organizers could make sure a person truly went to a conference or event as they would have an SBT to prove it.

The common factor between all these examples is that a user needs legitimate proof of an event or ownership that they have and cannot be transferred.

Conclusion

Soulbound tokens are a groundbreaking innovation in the world of blockchain technology and have the potential to transform various industries by providing unique and secure ways to represent ownership and control over digital assets.

We mention some real use cases that are in their first stages and many others that still need development.

In my opinion, to see soulbound tokens in our daily lives, we still need time and development for the technology to evolve so it’s more user friendly and the masses can adopt them.

During my recent interaction with the Dequest dApp, I had the opportunity to utilize soulbound tokens and it was really easy to do the account setup process and receive my initial soulbound token.

I did some initial quests but since the app is still in beta I didn’t have the opportunity to play a game, win a quest and see some in-game rewards but for sure, when a first release is available I will give it a try.

I have high expectations for the integration of this technology with other web3 concepts, such as zero knowledge proof, as I believe they will complement each other exceptionally well.

The gamified expansion of its Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem involves minting a free Sewer Pass to play a game called Dookey Dash.

Introduction to the Expansion and Free Sewer Pass Mi

Yuga Labs, the creative studio behind Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has announced an expansion to its non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystem that starts with a free mint and a skill-based game.

The unique drop, which involves multiple steps, begins on Jan. 17 with a free mint for existing Bored Ape Yacht Club/Mutant Ape Yacht Club holders called Sewer Passes. These tokens are the key to unlocking a skill-based game called Dookey Dash, which opens for gameplay on Jan. 18.

Gameplay and Rewards for Sewer Pass Holders

Dookey Dash will be playable to anyone who holds a Sewer Pass, including those purchased on the secondary marketplace. Holders are able to play the game an unlimited amount of times, with the goal of receiving a score higher than 0 to validate their Sewer Passes and “transform them into a mysterious power source.”

The results of this wacky process will reveal itself on Feb. 15 when Dookey Dash gameplay ends.

“Sewer Pass holders will compete for the highest score and earn their new power source,” BAYC wrote in a series of tweets on Wednesday. “The highest single-run score on your specific Sewer Pass and accompanying wallet that achieved the run will determine what it reveals.”

The team also hinted that whatever is revealed will “evolve throughout 2023” and will be used in future “battles.” You can read a long explanation of the mechanics of the game here.

The Otherside and the Narrative Experience

It’s clear that this new NFT mint, which began with a silly and NSFW animated video on Dec. 21 called “The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey,” is part of Yuga’s broader plans to develop an interoperable metaverse experience called “The Otherside.” The platform will allow players to own land and turn their existing NFTs into playable characters.

“All of the projects that we have are deeply important to us,” Wylie Aronow, one of the co-founders of Yuga Labs, told CoinDesk in an interview last month. “Where we see the Otherside is at that intersection.”

According to the road map of Yuga Labs’ latest project, NFTs created from this month-long experiment will be part of a narrative experience called “Chapter 1” at a later date.

Apple App Store To Allow Apps Selling NFTs https://mightyblock.co/blog/news/apple-app-store-to-allow-apps-selling-nfts/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 19:22:00 +0000 https://mightyblock.co/?p=5938 Apple App Store will allow apps selling NFTs on its platform.

]]>
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have been making faster inroads in the crypto space and even global tech giants have been warming up to it. As per the latest development, the Apple App Store will allow apps selling NFTs on its platform.

Apple has green-flagged new apps selling NFTs as well as developers of the existing apps listed on the App Store. But the catch here is that Apple will be charging a 30% hefty fee for all NFT transactions made through the apps.

This hefty fee will also deter projects, game owners, and apps from using this feature on the App Store. This is because other typical NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea and Magic Eden often take only 5% commission which is very negligible.

As reported by The Information, NFT startup Magic Eden has decided to withdraw its services from the App Store. This happens even after Apple reduced its commission to 15% for companies with annual revenue of less than $1 million. Web3 CEO Gabriel Leydon sees the overall positive side of the situation noting:

“Everyone is focusing on apple wanting its 30% cut of each transaction without realizing this could put an ETH wallet in every single mobile game onboarding 1B+ players!” He added, “I will HAPPILY give Apple a 30% cut of a free NFT.”

Apple Says No To Crypto

Although Apple is currently allowing apps on the App Store to sell NFTs, the company shall still not be accepting crypto yet. Also, Apple is refraining from getting directly involved with the crypto and NFT space. One of the obvious reasons would be they don’t want to draw the regulatory ire as faced by Meta, previously Facebook.

Earlier in June this year, there were some rumors though about Apple possibly releasing NFT trading cards at one of their developer conferences. However, it never came to fruition.

How NFT Rentals can help Web3 Games https://mightyblock.co/blog/nfts/nft-rentals-games/ https://mightyblock.co/blog/nfts/nft-rentals-games/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 14:28:20 +0000 https://mightyblock.co/?p=5724 NFT Rentals will push the boundaries of what is possible in Web3 Games.

ERC 4907 is a new standard that will help enter this new era of the gaming industry.

The post How NFT Rentals can help Web3 Games appeared first on Mighty Block |.

]]>
The first generation of blockchain games typically required players to own one or more NFTs— a costly investment which creates a high barrier to entry for newcomers to try out the game. To solve this problem, many games have created scholarship programs like YGG, OLA GG or Merit Circle where players can lend their NFTs to each other so anyone can enjoy the game without an initial investment. This trend along with limited “free to play” modes are being adopted by most if not all games in the space.

Put simply, the basic idea of NFT rentals is that NFT owners can rent out their digital assets for temporary use for various purposes. This is a relatively new concept, but as it continues to gain traction within NFT communities, it has the potential to significantly impact the broader Web3 landscape.

Current approaches to NFT Rentals

There are currently four approaches to NFT Rental, each with it’s limitations and risks:

Wrapped NFTs

Instead of giving the original asset to the borrower, the rental protocol mints an expirable version of the NFT (which contains all of the unique features and metadata of the original). This wrapped version of the NFT is then given to the borrower.

The protocol secures the original NFT which is returned to the owner after the agreed-upon rental contract has expired. Now, token holders can enjoy the benefits of renting out assets that they aren’t currently using, but that they would not like to sell.

The problem with this approach: the borrower is not actually using the NFT but a wrapped version, which is not elegible for Airdrops. Also, as the borrower is not holding the real asset, there is a risk that other protocols and systems won’t consider it valid (ie: game server authentication scheme)

Example NFT Rentals
An example of a project following this approach is: IQ Protocol

Registry smart contracts

This approach requires the borrower an up-front payment that enables NFT rentals without collateral. The NFT is put into escrow in a registry smart contract. The smart contract assigns a use right to the renter when the NFT is rented. The project that wants to make use of collateral-free renting must check the registry contract to see if someone is renting an NFT, therefore this solution requires integration between the rental protocol project smart contract and the client project.

The problem with this approach: the borrower has to pay all the rent upfront, putting a friction to the rent.

Other example NFT Rentals
An example of a project following this approach is: reNFT

Collateralized Rentals

In this method, the owner will transfer ownership of the NFT to the user with some collateral or conditions to ensure that the renter will return ownership after the rental period is complete. Once the NFT is rented out, the original owner has no control over it, which creates many potential risks:

  • A collateral is a huge barrier for people to rent because rent often makes sense due to a lack of funds
  • If the value of the NFT changes and becomes higher than the collateral, the lender is at risk
  • The renter can use the NFT as collateral for a loan without asking permission from the lender
Other example NFT Rentals
An example of a project following this approach is: reNFT

Develop smart contracts in-house

The project can develop its own smart contracts and control the rental experience end to end. This is the case of Splinterlands, using the Hive blockchain. The benefit of this approach, is that you can control the rules and adjust them as you go.

The problem with this approach is that you need to develop all the rental solution in-house, which can be prohibitive to most projects.

NFT Rentals in Splinterlands
Car rental in Splinterlands via ERC4907: the new standard

The brand new ERC-4907 NFT Rental Standard passed the final review by the Ethereum development team on June 28, 2022, and became the 30th ERC standard. Now, Rentable NFTs are made possible by the new Ethereum token Standard ERC-4907.

ERC-4907, allows an NFT owner to permit another individual to use their NFT for a designated period of time. After that time ends, the user no longer has access to the NFT.

These are some benefits that this ERC will bring to Web3 in general:

Clear Rights Assignment

With Dual “owner” and “user” roles, it becomes significantly easier to manage what lenders and borrowers can and cannot do with the NFT (in other words, their rights). Additionally, owners can control who the user is and it’s easy for other projects to assign their own rights to either the owners or the users.

Simple On-chain Time Management

Once a rental period is over, the user role needs to be reset and the “user” has to lose access to the right to use the NFT. This is usually accomplished with a second on-chain transaction but that is gas inefficient and can lead to complications because it’s imprecise. With the expires function, there is no need for another transaction because the “user” is invalidated automatically after the duration is over.

Easy Third-Party Integration

In the spirit of permissionless interoperability, this standard makes it easier for third-party protocols to manage NFT usage rights without permission from the NFT issuer or the NFT application. Once a project has adopted the additional user role and expires, any other project can directly interact with these features and implement their own type of transaction. For example, a PFP NFT using this standard can be integrated into both a rental platform where users can rent the NFT for 30 days AND, at the same time, a mortgage platform where users can use the NFT while eventually buying ownership of the NFT with installment payments. This would all be done without needing the permission of the original PFP project.

Potential benefits for game developers

The gaming industry is projected to surpass a global audience of 3 billion and a size of $103.5 Bn in revenues according to NewZoo.

Global games market

Web 3.0 will revolutionize gaming

The gaming industry hasn’t really allowed users to own pieces of the games they love. Since it’s inception, it’s been this way and it has worked fine. Gamers download and buy games or just buy in-game virtual goods. Game developers or publishers create and run live games with little input from the users, since there is no shared ownership.

However, when Crypto Kitties went live and users discovered they could own, breed and sell their cats, the whole gaming industry changed: for the first time, end users could own pieces of the product and decide if they wanted to just have fun and play or if they also would start a breeding operation and make a profit. This game was built on top of Ethereum, clogging it’s blockchain, even though its user base was small. The cost of playing the game has risen significantly due to the rapid rise of Ether price in the third stage. Ether price increased from US $451 on December 10, 2017, to US $1,322 on January 10, 2018 (see Figure 13), resulting in a significant increase in the cost of playing the game, raising the bars for new players entering the game.

Crypto Kitties price in Ethereum
Crypto Kitties was so successful that the whole Ethereum chain was super expensive to use.

To all of us involved in the gaming industry, it was evident that this new technology would change some fundamental things:

after web 3

In order to open the gates to many more users, I believe the whole gaming industry should be obsessed with presenting Web3 Games to non-technical users in a friendly and frictionless way that competes with the Free To Play model. The barrier of entry must be lowered with easier to use tools and with low (or non) cost to try new games, and NFT rentals can help a lot to achieve that goal.

NFT Renting can help reduce friction to try games

The Free To Play (F2P) refers to the business model for online games in which the game designers do not charge the user or player in order to join the game. Instead, they hope to bring in revenue from advertisements or in-game sales, such as payment for upgrades, special abilities, special items, and expansion packs.

The reality is, if a game is successful, only up to 2% of the users will become paying customers. And in order to make the numbers work, there needs to be a high volume of new users each day and a high volume of Daily Active Users (DAUs) engaged with the game.

With NFTs required to start playing new games, onboarding new users in the thousands is just impossible, because users need to try games and feel engaged before committing to playing them long term and become regular paying users.

This is why I personally believe NFT Rentals and NFT Mortgages can help open up the gates to new audiences joining Web3 Games.

Potential use cases for Gamers

There are many situations in games, in which having a temporary asset can make the difference. Below are some examples of these.

NFT Rentals to participate in special in-game Events

Special events are very common in the gaming industry. They are open for a short period of time in the days range, they are highly competitive and give away important rewards to active participants.

Why not join these events using NFTs rented specifically to participate?

NFT Rentals to level up or evolve other owned NFTs

RPGs are all about owning characters that interact with each other and work together in combat.

A very common feature to see in the game design of an RPG is evolution: taking your character to the next level by sacrificing other characters and using materials provided by the game or acquired with hard currency (or tokens in web3 games).

A way of evolving characters faster could be to rent NFTs that produce required materials, combine them with other NFTs and resources and finally perform the evolution.

Missions are used in almost any modern game loop to generate user engagement and create a habit of logging into the game daily. Missions guide users during their game sessions and are a popular tool used by game designers to trigger behaviors towards monetization and retention.

For users, completing Missions can be a fun experience and can also become a functional way of getting precious resources to continue progressing in the game story and the game loop.

If a user feels stuck or just doesn’t have the assets to finish them, Renting powerful NFTs or NFTs that create synergies with his/her owned NFTs make complete sense and I believe this is a behavior we’ll see.

NFT Rentals to increase the chances of winning a PvP tournament

Live tournaments are all about competition. They are present in eSports but also in casual games.

Why not rent powerful NFTs to compete in live tournaments to have an edge over other participants?

I personally believe all games with highly competitive mechanics will benefits from NFT Rentals and should actually be designed with this possibility as part of the User Experience and Game Design.

Conclusion

This is an exciting moment of the crypto and NFTs industry. The digitization of assets is a revolution in how ownership is defined. The ERC-4907 standard eliminates the need for collateral in lending and borrowing NFTs. If it is widely adopted as the standard for NFT creation and programming, it will unlock safer and more lucrative possibilities for NFT owners, buyers, marketplaces, artists.

However, the ERC-4907 standard has not yet been deployed by any projects. We’ll have to wait and see how effective it is and if this innovation can move us closer to a wider adoption of Web3 Games.

Four blockchain-based metaverse projects generated more than $100 million worth of virtual land nonfungible token (NFT) sales last week, according to data from DappRadar.

A Tuesday post from the decentralized application analytics firm reported that between Nov. 22 and Nov. 28, activity was “booming” on The Sandbox, Decentraland, CryptoVoxels and Somnium Space with a combined $105.8 million worth of trading volume among them from more than 6,000 traders:

“Undoubtedly, Metaverse land is the next big hit in the NFT space. Outputting record sales numbers and constantly increasing NFT prices, virtual worlds are the new top commodity in the crypto space.”

The Sandbox represented the lion’s share of volume for the week with $86.56 million, Decentraland accounted for $15.53 million, while CryptoVoxels and Somnium Space generated $2.68 million and $1.1 million, respectively. All four of these metaverse projects are built on the Ethereum blockchain, although projects on other chains such as Solana are beginning to gather pace, too.

DappRadar noted that “the wave of attention towards virtual worlds like The Sandbox and Decentraland started with Facebook’s rebranding to Meta.”

“However, this is only the tip of the iceberg that pushed the term Metaverse into the mainstream. Virtual worlds carry such enormous potential, and we’re just beginning to see the full array of use cases for metaverse land,” the blog post read.

Commenting on The Sandbox’s enormous surge in NFT land sales volume, Yat Siu, chairman and co-founder of Sandbox’s parent company, Animoca Brands, told Cointelegraph:

“Facebook in their attempt to usurp the narrative of the metaverse caused a chain reaction of other companies not in Web 3.0 (such as Microsoft) to also announce their metaverse strategies and created mass interest and awareness.”

Siu contrasted Meta’s approach to the more organic, user-built environment of The Sandbox.

“While not everyone understands what digital property rights really mean, enough of them are interested in this now, and this has created more net awareness. The Sandbox has captured the narrative of a real metaverse — one where you can really own a piece of it, and this is also reflected somewhat in the token price,” added Siu.

Out of the four projects listed, Decentraland has seen the biggest NFT land sale over the last 30 days, with a plot consisting of 116 parcels of land in the virtual world’s Fashion Street District selling for 618,000 MANA tokens ($2.7 million at current prices) on Nov. 23.

On the same day, The Sandbox also sold a tokenized ultra-luxury mega-yacht for 149 Ether (ETH) worth more than $666,000 at the time of writing.

Sales volumes of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) surged to $10.7 billion in the third quarter of 2021, up more than eightfold from the previous quarter, according to data from market tracker DappRadar, as the frenzy for crypto assets reached new highs.

Surging sales and hefty prices on NFTs – items which do not physically exist – have baffled many but the explosive growth shows no sign of abating. read more

The third-quarter figure was up from $1.3 billion in Q2 and $1.2 billion in Q1, DappRadar said. read more

To be sure, estimates for the size of the NFT market vary depending on what is included. Transactions which take place “off-chain”, such as NFT art sales at auction houses, are often not captured by the data.

DappRadar’s numbers, which include multiple blockchains and “off-chain” transactions, put total 2021 sales volume at $13.2 billion. Another market tracker, CryptoSlam, which excludes “off-chain” sales, says the figure is $9.6 billion.

Meanwhile, NonFungible.com, which tracks NFTs on the ethereum blockchain only, puts the 2021 total volume at $7 billion.

The most expensive known NFT sale was a digital collage sold at Christie’s for $69.3 million in March. Since then, no known NFT has come close to this price, but auction houses still hold NFT sales, often fetching millions. read more

NTF buyers

However, despite growing sales and celebrities and other investors jumping on the trend, the number of NFT buyers remains relatively small: there were just 265,927 active wallets trading NFTs on the ethereum blockchain in Q3, NonFungible.com said.

More than half of NFTs sold in Q3 were $101-$1,000, while those in the $1,001-$10,000 bracket accounted for 20% of sales, and 17% fetched less than $100, NonFungible.com said.

NTFs

One NFT brand to see particularly high growth in Q3 was Art Blocks, a U.S.-based project which sells NFTs of algorithmically-generated digital artworks.

On Saturday, an Art Blocks NFT sold for 2,100 ether (around $6.9 million at the time). Average Art Blocks prices have risen to roughly $15,100 per NFT in September, up from $3,300 in July, according to CryptoSlam.

NTF sales

Gaming-related NFTs also surged, with the blockchain-based game Axie Infinity leading the “play-to-earn” sector with $776 million in Q3 revenues, DappRadar said.
